In our quest to buy used iPhones cheap, we must also consider mini-cell phones. Mini cell phones, such as the Panasonic G50, GD55, and the Pantech C3 are, well... really small :-) Like any other phones, they also come with the latest technology and features. Unfortunately, they are also a bit of a novelty item and you pay a premium for the extra technology used to produce them in such a small package. When you consider their cost compared to a used iphone, they don't measure up.

Some mini cell phones have fast internet access, but as the web page gets compressed to about 90 percent of the original size, functionality is somewhat compromised.

Mini cell phones come with a 3.2 inch TFT resistive touch screen. There are options to auto rotate with an accelerometer sensor. They also come with a proximity sensor and handwriting recognition tools with a well equipped QWERTY keyboard. Although small in size, they come with 8 GB of expandable memory up to 16 GB. They also include a 5MP dual LED flash camera, allowing you to do video recording.

“Jailbreaking” a Used iPhone

When buying refurbished or used iPhones, you are also buying a relationship with AT&T, whether you want it or not. If you decide that you want to use the phone with a carrier other than AT&T, you have to install a software application on your computer and transfer it to your iPhone, which allows you to break open and modify your iPhone’s file system. This unlocking process is called “jailbreaking.”

Jail breaking your phone allows you to customize its look, install ringtones, and add other third party applications. But…it also VOIDS YOUR WARRANTY! So… why would you want to do it?

If you bought a used iPhone and it’s out of warranty it wouldn’t really matter if you jailbreak it, except for the fact that all applications that jailbreak your phone are unauthorized and could lead to your phone being completely disabled. In other words, during the operation to unlock your phone something could go wrong and your phone could die, so it’s a gamble.

But, it may be worth the gamble because there are a zillion applications out there that would really enhance your iPhone and make it more valuable. Also, if the worst happens and your iPhone goes belly-up, it’s possible you could reverse the operation by taking it to a non-AT&T or non-Apple techie. I’ve also heard that a simple fix could be to connect your malfunctioning iPhone to iTunes, re-sync it and thereby restore it to its original settings, but I’ve never tried that personally. Just don’t count on AT&T or Apple to help you.

My advice? Whether it’s a new, refurbished or used iPhone, it involves a significant financial investment and I would be very careful about doing anything that might render that investment worthless.

Rather than pay big bucks for a new iPhone, it makes $en$e to explore the possibility of buying a refurbished or used iPhone instead. But what’s the best route to go – used or refurbished?

The difference between a refurbished iPhone and a used iphone is more than you might think. While a second-hand iPhone is significantly less expensive than new, there are some things to watch out for.

A refurbished iphone has been refurbished for a reason. In other words, there was a problem with it that needed to be fixed. It could have been a major problem or something very minor. In any event, it was fixed (refurbished) – everything was checked out and it was, theoretically, returned to near-new condition. It also may be that the phone was just returned for some other reason than the fact that it didn’t function properly and couldn’t be resold as new.

So the thing to watch out for here is who refurbished the phone and what representations do they make about its working condition and what guarantees do they provide? An iPhone refurbished by a reputable company and being sold by an established source like Amazon is probably a pretty safe bet.

On the other hand, used iPhones are more likely to be offered by private parties and sold on venues like Ebay, so the price might be a little less but the risk is higher. If it can be determined with a reasonable degree of confidence that the seller is not trying to get rid of the phone because he’s been having problems with it, then it’s probably a good buy. A private seller has no overhead and may even be willing to sell the used iPhone at a loss just to upgrade to a newer, better model.

Although this is not really used iPhone related, I found it interesting to note that Eastman Kodak Company recently sued Apple Inc. over technology related to to digital cameras in Apple's iPhones.

Kodak, a manufacturer of digital camers and other photography products, filed a complaint with the International Trade Commission alleging that the iPhone infringes on a Kodak patents covering technology for previewing photographs.

Kodak wants the federal agency that oversees trade disputes to bar Apple from importing parts and selling the iPhone. The USITC has the power to order U.S. Customs to stop imports of products and parts made with contested technology.

Kodak also filed separate lawsuits against Apple in U.S. District Court in Rochester, NY, Kodak's home, claiming an infringement of patents related to digital cameras and certain computer processes. It is asking for unspecified monetary and a court order to end the disputed practices.

However, not to worry, sales of iPhones are not immediately threatened. Patent cases can take months or years to resolve, and agreements over licensing and royalty payments often emerge. But the trade commission is viewed as a fast-track mediator that typically resolves such intellectual property disputes in 12-15 months. By that time used iPhones will be flooding the market anyway.

Buying used iphones cheap is like buying anything else used - caveat emptor - let the buyer beware! Here are some things to consider:

What condition is it in? Water damage, etc.? Any cracks in the screen or case?
Do you know the seller? Obviously, it would help if you can inspect the phone, and try it out, before buying. However, if you're buying online or through Ebay you need to be extra careful. Only purchase a used iPhone from someone with a high positive feedback rating and only pay with PayPal, so you have some payment protection. Why are they selling? Obtain a guarantee that allows you or a dealer to inspect the phone before the sale is officially consummated.
Confirm the ESN is clear. If the phone has been reported stolen or has a remaining balance owed on a previous account, the phone may be blacklisted and you may not be able to activate it. When you have the ESN, call your mobile provider and confirm that the phone can be activated.
What accessories are included? Standard accessories are: screen cleaner, earbuds, dock, USB charger, wall charger adapter, originial box and manual, stereo headset with mike, etc. The more accessories available, the better the deal!
And last but not least, make sure the phone does not come with a contract. It may be a great phone in super condition with lots of goodies, but you don't want to inherit someone else's long term contract.

Buying a used iphone cheap can be a great deal, mostly because they're less expensive. Someone else has paid the "up front" charges that are always built into a new product. But, again, buyer beware. A defective or stolen phone can wipe out any cost savings you would otherwise enjoy.
